We are thrilled to announce that this Saturday’s opening reception will be hosted by our friend, Robyne Robinson. Robyne is an Emmy-winning news broadcaster who serves as Public Art Coordinator for the City of Carlsbad, Principal Art Consultant for fiveXfive Public Art, Art of the West Magazine contributor, jewelry designer, former Director of Arts as MSP airport, and was the first African American prime time news anchor in the state of Minnesota!
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Born out of experience and passion, multidisciplinary artist Tijera Williams' new photography exhibit Exodus From Iniquity explores material both deeply personal yet painfully universal. Existing at the heart of The Hill Street Country Club’s mantra that art is personal, Williams’ work explores what happens when loss takes place within blurred lines and a warped sense of time. The new exhibit delves into what follows as the artist heals and evolves in real-time.
Exodus From Iniquity runs from February 20th to April 10th in Hill Street’s Oceanside gallery and online in an innovative virtual imagining of the show. Over the last year, the staff at the gallery and program space has maintained and adapted its role in the San Diego County arts ecosystem by crafting an expanded online presence. When in-person gatherings were limited they featured online exhibitions and a platform for artists to sell their work. Williams’ exhibit will include a virtual opening reception on February 20, 2021, from 5p-7p and the show itself will be open to the public via in-person appointments and online through a virtual exhibit space. Hill Street’s all-women of color creative team has crafted an online experience that showcases this deeply personal work in a way that is accessible to the San Diego region and beyond.
The pieces in the show explore a couple in the throes of uncertainty, and Black people reimagined in classical scenes journeying through ecstasy and anguish. Williams’ work as a multidisciplinary artist explores the true to size Black body in space and in relation to other Black bodies. Prior to the pandemic, Williams imagined the pieces would have been paintings. The exhibit instead takes a deep dive into how the artist’s narrative style translates into photography. As a Black woman in the world of photography, Tijera Williams is carving space for her voice and her experience outside of the pressures of any expected gaze. The Hill Street Country Club’s co-founder Dinah Poellnitz notes the importance of creating this kind of space for artists to explore in non-traditional messy ways. “Art is personal, for Black artists, the work itself is a story-tool used to highlight our experiences”- Dinah Poellnitz. Using diverse mediums, reclaiming their bodies, and taking up space The Hill Street Country Club celebrates Black History Month their own way. In this, their 9th year the space is proud to curate shows that live outside of expectations, and outside of norms, a new kind of Black history being created right here in Oceanside.

The Mall asked MSP Airport to assist in its Fall campaign to connect the South Loop shopping center with fashion denizens of Northeast Minneapolis. The best way to do that: Take the train. As MSP Art Director, Robinson convinced Metro Transit to provide a "Fashion Show on the Go", with Mall models hopping a green line train and making a stop at the biggest train platform in the Twin Cities - MSP Airport - for an art and fashion show, complete with a DJ...
The models also made stops on the south side, downtown and the Hennepin Theater District, for a catwalk turn under a mural tribute by artist Kobra to a legendary Minnesota son, Bob Dylan.
