flatland gallery
Minneapolis MN

flatland was an influential contemporary visual art gallery owned and curated by Robyne Robinson from 2000-2003. The 700 sq. ft Northeast Minneapolis gallery was a home to emerging sculptors, illustrators, photographers and mixed media artists as well as nationally recognized creatives. An award-winning gallery, flatland was featured in Art News, Travel + Leisure, Juxtapoz and Elle Décor Magazines, received commissions from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Northwest Airlines, and placed its artists in several prominent collections including Prince.

flatland artists included:

Ta-Coumba Aiken
Kii Arens
Michael Crouser
Luis Fitch
Edith Garcia
Derek Hess
Seitu Jones
Faheem Majeed
Dan Picasso
Siddiqi Ray
Melvin & Rose Smith
Carl Wesley

One of the things flatland was best known for was its ability to promote both the gallery and its artists. Exhibition invitations were often cheeky invitations on condoms, afro picks or rat traps. Many people considered them collectables. flatland's brilliant branding and marketing added to the attitude and showmanship of the new galleries of the 2000's: Midway, Ox Op and Soo Visual Art Center - alternatives to the Twin Cities' established Fine Art galleries.
